Black Women Urged To Play Election Role

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — E. Faye Williams, a native of Alexandria, and other leaders of national civil rights groups say black women will play a key role in efforts to re-elect President Barack Obama.

And nowhere is that more true than in Louisiana and other Southern states, say Louisiana delegates to the Democratic National Convention, the three-day convention that begins here today.

“Black women are being strengthened as they know what a difference they made in 2008,” said Williams, a graduate of Grambling State University and national chair of the National Congress of Black Women. “We haven’t always gotten credit for what we do. But since 2008 we’ve heard more about the percent of black women voting and how many of those votes went to the Democratic Party.”
